Does anyone have this kind of movement on their lockdown rod? See attached video. Seems like there should be a brace somewhere to keep from smacking around.
The video wouldn't open for me ... but even brand new, they looked to move sideways because all that holds them up is the fit of the joints in any bushings at each end. The left-right slop does not change the distance of the rod from carburetor to transmission, just gets the rod over past the back of the engine and down.
TBear. Agreed 100%. Works fine. Just rattling around Wasn’t sure if there was a brace on the intake at one point. I could cut open a hose and wrap the rod on the section that whacks the transmission housing I guess - assuming it don’t cause it to hang up.
IMO they have play them to make sure they do not not hang up or interfere with the carb linkage movement. If your is hitting the trans, something might be worn out, cracked or not installed correctly as far as connection points. I am pretty sure the rod should NOT hit anything in its normal movement or operation.
If you insp both ends and all looks normal, and the rod makes the trans down shift as required, than I'd add a wrap or 2 of black elec tape around the rod to prevent metal to metal contact and drive it.
I looked at your video and the side to side play is pretty much normal for them. My kickdown rod is exactly the same. As long as it is adjusted properly and kicks the transmission down when required, I wouldn't worry about it. You could change out the bushings in both ends which might snug it up a bit but in terms of operation, it shouldn't make any difference.
