i have been on here awhile reading and learning. finally starting my build a few weeks ago and thought i would start a post. i picked up a 71 f100 long bed about a year ago and cant wait to get it where i want it.
the last couple weeks so far i stripped it all down
painted the frame, moved the gas tank to the back, lowered the front and back about 3.5" and went through replacing all the bushings and bearings
mostly stock for now. i want to get everything safe and reliable and get back on the road. after that i can start upgrading. i plan on taking the 390 apart this week. do a rebuild, put a new cam in and look into heads.

that was my original plan for the 360 but after looking at FE speed parts I picked up a 302 from a foxbody
made some progress on the engine. all new bearings, cam, pistons and accessories.
ran into the thermostat hosing issue with the 4 barrel intake but i think i can make an adapter for that.
and the water pump pulley seems to be 1/4" off.
What problem did you have with the thermostat housing? If you swapped over to a 4bbl intake, it will probably use the bigger thermostat housing and they are cheap. I got one from rockauto before for my 390.
do you happen to know the part number. i looked there before but not all of them list that dimension. i have checked under f100 and galaxie. a few days ago there was one on the site under the galaxie that had the correct dimensions but it was $75. i dont see it one there anymore. any reason not to make an adapter?
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...r+outlet,10337. Any one of these three should work if your intake manifold has the large hole and uses 2.5" thermostats. I got one about 6 years ago from rockauto but I dont recall which one. It was most likely the Dorman. When looking at their thermo housings, they dont show that measurement. But, if you look at their thermostats, they are all 2.5" for this year. You can make an adapter if you like though.
Sounds to me like it is the wrong water pump. Do you have the original still? Take a measurement from the front of the engine to the face of the water pump shaft. I did find this info on another forum,
"The long shaft pump was used on the FE engines through 1960, when the 390 engine came out they went to the short shaft. The water pump mounting is the same on all the FE engines but when they started using alternators they changed some of the bracket holes. I think just saying you want the long shaft should be enough information but if you lay the water pump flat on the ground it should measure about 9" to the end of the shaft."
