"The long shaft pump was used on the FE engines through 1960, when the 390 engine came out they went to the short shaft. The water pump mounting is the same on all the FE engines but when they started using alternators they changed some of the bracket holes. I think just saying you want the long shaft should be enough information but if you lay the water pump flat on the ground it should measure about 9" to the end of the shaft."

Hope this helps.

I compared the new water pump to the old water pump and the shafts measured out to be the same. i measure them from mounting surface to end of shaft with a height gauge and they were within .015". The only difference was the old water pump pulley flange was higher up the shaft then the new water pump flange. i would have to measure it but it looked to be about 1/4" difference.
i am assuming (but i may be wrong) the flange is just pressed fit on there and was thinking maybe a gear puller might pull it out . has anyone seen this or done this before?

I haven't seen or heard of that before but we are talking an aftermarket part here. If you move that flange, remember, the shaft is the pilot for the pulley and fan spacer. Maybe take that water pump back to where you bought it and compare to another they have in stock. Or maybe even compare to another one at another parts store brand.

I got the water pump off rock auto. I was able to move the flange out far enough to line the pulleys up. The pilot still has enough room to engage the pulley but not much for the fan mount. I am leaning on going electrical fan so i am good with it. Well, as long as the alternator lines up.

Finally got the motor all hooked up and did the break in on the new cam. Alternator mounts were shaking like crazy causing the belt to smoke but other than that everything went pretty smooth.

Finally finished the body work on the cab. patched cowls, rear cab corners, floor pans, fuel hole, roof and removed drip rails. ready to primer when the rain lets up.

That is going to look amazing when you're done with it. Congrats on a good truck, and welcome to the forum :-)
