New to here and surprise surprise it comes when I have an issue with my truck! To be brief I bought my used 2018 F-250 in 2019 with 40k miles, and am currently at $67k miles. 6 months ago a check engine light came on (P2002) and my mechanic cycled it a few times and reset the code. It's come back on and the Ford dealership is telling me I need to replace the DPF. The cost is $1,929 to me, down from $5,500 due to a Ford loyalty credit.
Question: Is there anything I can do here other than pony up the dough? Not deleting..
This is obviously a manufacturing part defect, not maintenance issue, but my original and extended warranty dont cover it with the mileage says the dealership and Ford. The below bulletin the dealership is saying isn't valid for my 2018 F250, but I know it's just a defect they never fixed and would like them to cover the entire cost. Any advice here, or am I SOL and best paying the $2k to get it fixed? My mechanic said to take it to a bigger dealership and keep fighting, but that can be exhausting..
do some searching. find someone with a removed DPF, install yourself. Its a handful of bolts, some prying to get the emissions section separated from the tailpipe as the studs get in the way. otherwise its doable in an afternoon.
are you sure its not covered? isnt emissions stuff covered for 100k miles?
That recall only applied to certain 2015 and 2016 Super Duty. Not much you can do with that. Unless you are in California, where I think emissions defects warranty might be longer, you could be stuck having to pay that $2k.
Original manufacturer emissions warranty outside of California is 5yr/50k mile above 8500 gvwr, extended warranty doesn't include any coverage for the DPF.

How many miles does your vehicle currently have? What is typed isn't clear, given that you stated that your original and extended warranties have all expired.
Also, check with emissions laws of your state. Some states require that vehicle manufacturers warranty certain emissions control equipment for 10 years. There may be mileage limitations, but 67,000 miles would fall beneath all of them.
Im at 67k miles. Emissions performance warranty coverage is 5 years or 50k miles for heavy duty, GVWR 8500+. Ford Premium Care warranty doesn't cover the DPF. I live in Texas but am not finding anything that would extend the emissions warranty, unfortunately.

You might find a take off somewhere for less than 2k, but if Ford is willing to assist, and you get a new DPF for 2K, that's a deal.
Should you have to? I'd like to say no, but if you aren't using it as a truck, and only hauling groceries, I can see a short DPF life.
Will Ford warranty the replacement DPF for another 50k?
2 grand for a brand new DPF is a deal, but double check the emissions warranty, thinking that major components were covered to 80K.
And, yes, many dealers give a lifetime warranty on repairs, not sure on this repair though.
https://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/ they have NEW dpfs that you can buy. BUT WHY did it go bad. Thats needs to be looked at. I think the ford cost is OK. BUT find out why it went bad. You need to tow with this truck and you need to do some long trips. If you are using it as a short drive truck that would be the problem.
Also you could clean the dpf. If its a short drive truck I would do that.

That is on vehicles bellow 8500 gvwr. Where are these dealers that give a lifetime warranty?? Most Motorcraft parts carry a 2yr, unlimited mileage warranty, that doesn't even necessarily mean labor is covered for those 2 years. I would bet that most dealerships labor warranty is less than or at most, equal to the part warranty. The new DPF could possibly have a 5yr/50k warranty on the part.

It doesn't look like they have any DPF's for any newish Super Duties... However, I can recommend Thoroughbred. I had a great experience buying my DPK from them!
You say you got a P2002 code 6 months ago and had it cleared. It sounds like your DPF has been struggling for a while. If all they did was clear it 6 months ago it may be toast by now. Just doing a quick Google search, it looks like you can get used or refurbed DPF's in the $2000 - $2500-ish range, or a new one from Fairway for about $3500. So the $2000 cost from the dealership sounds like the best way to go, and especially if it includes an additional warranty. But first you should figure out why it's happening. It may be something as simple as you are not allowing it to complete regens as it should. If you take a lot of short drives this is most likely the cause. And if this case, this is not a part defect, but a lack of maintenance.
The new DPF is warrantied for 2 years. I'm going to just have them install it and hope it doesn't happen again in 50k. I haul more than groceries, so I think the defective part replacement should suffice. If there's any actual maintenance tips I would be happy to hear and take note of them.
Thanks everyone for your honest input! I'll update down the road if issues re-occur.

The highest suggestion for DPF maintenance is to keep idling to a bare minimum and next is to make long trips, highway miles are best for DPF equipped diesels.
