I agree with dhermesc on this one. I used to work for a landscape company and used both an old F250 and a John Deere 4020 to pull stumps and there is no comparison between a truck and a tractor. As some one else stated, try to leave at least 4 or more feet of the stump for leverage. Hook high on the stump and low on the tractor ( preferably below the axle ) . BE CAREFUL !! if a stump is solid, a tractor will easily flip. One of our local farmers was killed a couple of years ago trying this........... If the stump is more than about 12" diameter forget it , go rent a stump grinder.
a few years ago me and my dad were cutting down all the bushes from around the house. there were a few of those pine type bushes (dont know what they are called) but anyway we got his '78 f-350 dump truck, it weighs around 10,000 or so pounds. locked it in 4 Low and started pullin, we had all the tires spinnin on dry pavement and those things didnt move so we soaked em down for a while then tried again and with a lil more tuggin they finally came out. its really suprising how well the roots hold into the ground, untill then i had never seen that truck spin a tire no matter how much snow we plowed or what we were pullin on
My dad pulled out a stump...about 12" in diameter...with his 7.3 E-350 work van. It weighs a good 5 tons loaded. We cut the larger, main roots and she just popped right out. I guess it depends on the tree, kind of soil, and of course...the size.
bushes can get a heck of a root system going making them almost impossible to pull- and a real ******* for stump grinding- i get really peeved when people put decorative rocks around the shrubs and they have roots grown through them, really tears up my stumper teeth

I hear ya man! We get our teeth sent out to get them sharpened. The teeth are about 10 dollars EACH Canadian and only cost about $2 each to get sharpened. Which isn't too bad. And they last about half the time after they are sharpened so I am still ahead. By the way they are Vermeer teeth. What kind of stumper do you use BuiltTough? I was going to ask you b4 and I forgot. We have a Vermeer SC252. Pretty sweet piece of machinery. Worth their weight in gold!
i own a Vermeer sc252 also, and my dad and brother each have a Rako RG50- awesome machines, 2-3 times as fast as a sc252, but 3 times the price and it doesnt get through some gates my 252 does. i dont sharpen teeth anymore, too time consuming and yeah, they wear out in have the time and dont cut as good if ya ask me.
kennyrrt- business is slightly slowing down, usually does this time of year in MN ( november, not many people are out in their yards, so trees arent their concern. ) and i think you were refferring to the tree my climber shouldnt have cut down, as for that i removed about 98 percent of the tree, minues a few branches in the woods. i offered to give the guy $260 cash to have him order a few trees to be planted, but the greedy ******* wanted more $$$ so right now... its his loss. the guy i reffered him to would plant 3) 10 foot tall maples for $260, so i think thats a pretty good offer, but his greed set in now he gets nothing
