Ford Lightning Winter Performance
Ford Lightning Winter Performance
Hoovies garage reports he sold his Ford Lightning because winter performance was a disaster. In a later video he reports the day after he sold his truck it had a complete battery failure so not sure if the dismal winter performance was related to a defective battery system. Having said that we do know that battery performance is reduced in cold environments.
I've got a lithium battery in my motorcycle and it mentions in cold weather to warm it up if starting is an issue by turning on the headlight for a few seconds. Kind of easy to remember as it comes on auto when the key is turned on but yeah, it definitely speeds up the starter. That battery is 12 years old.
I haven’t watched videos from Hoovie’s Garage because I think he’s ridiculous. He’s all about the clickbait and hysteria, and I’d rather not reward that with more watch time from this guy.
I’ve been paying attention to winter range reports on other forums, and they actually seem to do better than I’d expect. I lost a full 50% of my rated range at 0º in my old Model 3, and the Lightning seems to do at least a bit better than that. This is a good one by a reputable channel without the hysteria. 210 miles at 17º is about what I’d expect. It’s important to remember that this is only a critical issue because of the current state of DC charging infrastructure. It’ll only get better from here.
But as for the truck itself, I’ve noticed a bunch of posts on Facebook and elsewhere with HV system faults. Seems like numerous owners have had individual battery modules fail, which requires a tow to the dealer. The upside is that the pack is serviceable, so they can be repaired without replacing the whole pack. But lots of owners are waiting for replacement modules for weeks, which isn’t a great sign. I’m honestly disappointed. Kia, Porsche, Audi, GM, and Tesla don’t seem to have these battery issues. Add that to the HVBJB contractor problem on the MachE and it seems like Ford isn’t starting off well.
