Exclamation Steering Box

What is difference between a SMA manual steering box vs. a HCD steering box ??? Where is the part number on the box , is there a tag attached to the box ?
Also , is the part number on a steering sector shaft ? I bought a 3575-D shaft but have not checked to see if it is actually that part number ?

Here you go:
https://www.fordification.com/partnos/steering-box.htm
It seems that a HCD is actually HCE which is a Bendix PS box. Your shaft seems to go with a 3504-D box. Are you going to rebuild your manual box? I would ship it to Red Head or Blue Top to get it professionally rebuilt as that is one thing you don't want to screw up if you have never done one before.

I did not include C5TZ WITH THE 3575-D , which is listed as a manual steering part in the No.26 list ,goes with a SMA - E, H, K box.
Now to find the worm & carriage shaft !!! oh I just found it !!!
HCE may supersede a HCD .
Thank-you for helping me find the answer

Is this Bendix box , Part # C5TZ-3504-D
MY STEERING BOX LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT ,
I must go out in the cold and look at my tag again and the steering box
Is Saginaw a HCD , or HDE ,
Which is better , stronger , a Bendix or a HCD - HDE STEERING box ???
My box looks bigger I think and it does not look like this photo if I remember correctly !!! Photo is shown
I think I need a HCD-B BOX ...NOT THIS ONE !
iS HCD - B box a better box ???

An HCD box is a 65-66 manual box,
C5TZ-3504-D., which uses sector shaft 3575-D.

  • PARTS LIST NO. 26 -—C5TZ 3504-D
C5TZ 3524-B Shaft & rack assy. - use w/ #HCD-B
C5TZ 3524-G Shaft & rack assy. - input -use w/ #SMA-E, H or K
From what I see all the parts will work with either box except the Shaft & Rack assemblies , which I think is odd . My tag on my steering box is SM - K . It also looks different from a HCD . this is why it seems strange that all the other parts listed in list no. 26 does not distinguish between SMA or HCD !!!
I think I have this figured out except the part is a SMA box a Saginaw Box ??? and which is stronger , or better to have ???

HCD-B showed up in 1965. So did SMA-E,H. All three had the same replacement part number C5TZ3504D. Ford F100 and 250. The HCD-B did originally take a different shaft and rack assembly.
HCD-B was originally part number C5TZ3504A but then replaced by C5TZ3504D.
SMA-K first appeared 1968/69 in addition to SMA-E,H. Now all three are listed to fit F100/250 and F350. That would be strong enough for me.
As of 1971/72, The SMA-E was not listed anymore. All of the above I believe were Ford designed.
