Not always true. At work we will usually break bolts before stripping the aluminum threads during breaking torque checks. Short threads are a different story and will strip the aluminum though. It depends a lot on the depth/length of threads.

Said kit would include tools for pressing parts out and in.

That definitely changes the calculus a little bit. Are y'all projecting new stock levels of flow or something exceeding that?

With regards to machined HPOP cases, I wonder if the 6.0 HPOP internals could be used as the guts. Iirc that pump flows more?

18°, 19° and 20° could all be options.

The questions everyone is going to ask are price point compared to current options, performance expectations compared to current options, and will it be dumbed down enough for us average Joe's to not eff it up.

I don't think it's going to be that hard to do. Once a few people have done it and discussed it, I imagine it will be a fairly common and quite successful option vs. buying a whole pump.
I want the kit to just have as a standby in the same box as a spare IPR and such.
I think an installer for the front seal would end up being more desirable, maybe the pressing tool would work for that too.

The included tools would need to do everything. The user would just need to add a press. A mallet is not ideal but may work on a pinch.

What would you spend for a DIY stage two pump that retails for $750-$900?

Well, lets see, the cncfab stage 2 hpop is 695, its a proven high quality unit with a warrantee.

so a similar diy kit with no warrantee or reinforced inserts, to me, (well actually not since I would never do it) is worth about 200 shipped.

Well not all of us are so willing to drink the CNC Kool-Aid, and lets not forget one of the key reasons this thread was started. Having a known quality housing.

That would get you about a 1/3 of the way there.

So you’re expecting to retail a DIY kit for $600 when the CNC stage 2 only runs $95 more with steel inserts, warranty, professional build, and testing?

udsuth, I know you had concerns in the past but I still believe the pumps you received were satisfactory and the casting anomalies were present from the time of OEM casting. I also assume you could send in your core for rebuild at CNC if you had a “known good one”.

I don't count the "sale" price, so retail is $750. I do know we can't do it for $200. Maybe it would be closer to $400-500. It's too early to know.

One thing is for sure, diy is a core part of this forum, so finding new ways to continue that is really nice to see!

The customer would need all the tools and parts that the pump shop uses. This is what will drive the cost. I'll start a new thread if we continue down this path.
