No Start - Maybe PATS, Control Module or Something Else?

Hi Everyone,

This looks to be a great community you've built here. I've been perusing the forum to help troubleshoot an issue I'm experiencing but keep coming up short and was hoping someone might be able to offer a bit of guidance or help be a sounding board. I have a 2013 F-150 Platinum with a 6.2L engine. Truck was running well and then I had an issue the other day with it not starting (power cycles on ok, no crank). I fiddled with the ignition on and off for a few minutes and played with the battery in the key, and presto she cranked up and ran perfectly. Got in to go to work in the AM and fired up like a charm so I figured it had something to do with the key battery (I've since learned that this would not have been the case). Went to drive home from work and now it won't start at all. Seems to power up ok but I can't get the engine to turn over. It's throwing quite a few error codes which has me confused on where to start. I suspect maybe some of these codes are related:
  1. Code: U0422:00-2E - Invalid Data Received From Body Control Module (From Powertrain Control Module PCM)
  2. Code: B1215B1215:00-2B - External Memory Card (From Accessory Protocol Interface Module APIM)
  3. Code: B10F1:14-0A - Key In Switch - Circuit Short To Ground Or Open (From Body Control Module BCM)
  4. Code: B10D7:17-08 - PATS Key (From Body Control Module BCM)
  5. Code: B1380:17-08 - Steering Wheel Right Switch Pack - Circuit Voltage Above Threshold (From Steering Column Control Module SCCM)
  6. Code: B1A82:13-08 - External Trip Switch - Circuit Open (From Instrument Panel Control Module IPC)
I'm also getting the following codes that I think are unrelated:
  • Code: B2729 - Cushion Over-Temp Detected
  • Code: B1163 - Left Power Running Board Hall-Effect Sensor Failure (Note I removed the running boards)
  • Code: B1170 - Right Power Running Board Hall-Effect Sensor Failure (Note I removed the running boards)
  • Code: B116D - LH Power Running Board Motor Line Open (Note I removed the running boards)
  • Code: B116E - RH Power Running Board Motor Line Open
I've tried to educate myself on the PATS system. I found these links useful toward that end:I'm getting error codes from multiple control modules (Body CM, Steering Column CM, Instrument Panel CM, Accessory Protocol Interface Module, Powertrain Control Module). Before I start just tearing into things I'm wondering if anyone here has some thoughts about how I might proceed. I used ForScan to run some basic self tests (SCCM, IPC) but wasn't even really sure what I was doing there. The tests passed anyway. I have 3 programmed keys and same issue with all the keys. I tried to disconnect/reconnect the battery and no change. I guess I'm not at this point 100% sure it's not a starter issue but the list of codes above makes me think there's something going on with the computer system (PATS or other) that's not letting the starter relay try. Thanks folks for any help you might be able to offer.

Edit to add my current top suspects:
  • PCM Board Itself or possibly a fuse that is related that I haven't identified.
  • PATS transceiver / PATS Control Module (still trying to figure out if this is built into the instrument cluster or a separate module)
  • Clockspring
  • Ignition Switch

Nick

If it's a genuine PATS-only event, you should be seeing either a "starting system fault" message on the cluster or a fast-flashing PATS indicator, depending on how the truck is equipped. You didn't mention such an obvious indication.

Thank you ProjectSho. That's a good point. I'm not receiving either of those flags.

Then the problem is going to be "upstream" of what constitutes PATS.

1. What was used to pull the codes?
2. From which modules were each of those codes pulled in the first grouping?

Since the running boards have been deleted, all of those codes can be ignored.

Thanks again ProjectSho.

1. What was used to pull the codes?OBD Link MX+ over Bluetooth to ForScan2. From which modules were each of those codes pulled in the first grouping?
I updated in the original thread to include this information..

Update from today so far. I reset the DTC's and am left with the following 2 codes:
  • Code: B1215B1215:00-2B - External Memory Card (From Accessory Protocol Interface Module APIM)
  • Code: B10F1:14-0A - Key In Switch - Circuit Short To Ground Or Open (From Body Control Module BCM)
Perhaps the ignition switch is where I need to be snooping first?

Likely Resolved - Replaced Starter

After some additional work on it. Looks like the issued was (*fingers crossed*) the starter. Replaced the starter and all seems well for now. Thanks everyone, and I'll check back if this resolution doesn't prove out.
