NO CRANK

2010 f250. With 40,000 miles. About 3 weeks ago the truck sat for 4 days while we went on vacation. We come home and the temperatures were below zero. Truck had no crank when I tried to start it. A few hours later I had gotten it to turn over. Not sure how but it did. So today its doing the same thing. The temp has dropped back down to freezing. The Security light is rapidly flashing. No crank on key or key fob. Is it possible with the first freeze it hurt the battery from sitting and with the second cold spell it just had enough. I Hooked a scanner to it. It's not even allowing the truck to get send a live feed to the scanner.

Sounds like a bad battery, get it warm, charged and tested, then move farther up the tree ensure starter solenoid is functioning properly listen for chatter on the solenoid chatter would mean a need for replacement, and make sure that a consistent 12v makes it to the starter when cranking. If it is and the starter has an intermittent issue some times a light hammer tap can spin it, doesn’t mean you won’t need a starter but the hammer tap can work. Not sure if it’s even accessible for the hammer tap but you never know. But due to the loss of communication to the code reader sounds like a bad battery, other things to look for are white corroded battery terminals clean them, a swollen case on the battery, tight battery terminals and volt drop across connections including ground and power wires. Many things can make a no crank possible may need to get a starter circuit diagram for the make model year of truck

So I have checked everything over more than once. Well everything but the battery. The truck started yesterday but the temperature wasnt freezing. It was still in the 40s. Todays high was 32 and its now in the lower 20s. I tried every other simple route first. I'm starting to learn more and more that these ford's can be very sensitive when it comes to voltage. The truck use to sit every summer and was only being used in the winter. I have done TONS of work to it. Pinion seals, ball joints, u joints, tie rods, brakes, there's a ton more. Nothing elesctrical. But I did learn the battery is pretty old.

I worked as a diesel generator technician and where quick starts of engines were critical typical lead acid batteries were recommended replacement at 3 years, the large 13l Diesel engines had the same susceptibility to voltage drop any lower than 10-11v could cause no start issues even with cranking, just because the ecm could not stay alive during cranking not good for hospitals and critical equipment. but yeah the cheap otc battery tester could pick up a bad battery even when the battery would crank the engine. Battery warmers were also a heavily used option as our climate can regularly reach -40 Celsius. Part number was otc 3183

Thank you. So it's not a diesel. It's gas 5.4 but it still the same concept. That's what's making me think battery is because the truck has started and ran every day up until we had a deep freeze. I threw a jump pack on last time it happened. I'm wondering if maybe that warmed up the battery enough to get it started. It's ran fine the last few weeks. It's also been in the 40s and 50s. Now we're back down in the 20s and it's not cranking again. The security light just blinks fast.
