ok so heres the story, i bought a '91 Bronco 4x4 with a 5.8 and an E code tranny with 17 pan bolts (E4OD, from what i have found). The truck runs real well but I bought it with a blown tranny. I towed it home and started it, there was an awful grinding sound coming from what sounded like the front of the tranny, i put it in drive and the sound got quieter and the bronco drove forward about 10 feet then i put it in nuetral the sound got real loud again then i put it in reverse and sound lessened and it went backwards for about 5 feet and the sound completely stopped and the noise did too so i pushed it the last 5 feet back into its spot and looked underneath and there was tranny fluid dripping out of front of tranny. So I started looking for a tranny and torque converter. Any chance it could be just the torque converter? Not sure what would happen to the torque coverter but it sounded like the noise was coming from very front of the tranny. I have not been able to find a used tranny around here and i don't want to stick a exspensive rebuilt unit in it since i have never driven this vehicle. The junkyard down the road from my house wants $900 for a used E4OD. Crazy! So I found a tranny on ebay out of a '88 Bronco. I asked the guy how many pan bolts it had and he said 17, same as mine but he said his tranny code was a K (mine is a E). Anyone know what the difference is between these two trannies if any? Would they be interchangeable? His bronco was a 302 and mine has a 351.
Any info or any guidance as to where i can find out the difference would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
K is the C-6 transmission, which is vacuum-controlled and has no overdrive. Your E4OD is computer-controlled, so you'll have codes (but no dash lights) if you delete it. $900 isn't a bad price for a GOOD used E4OD - check the reman prices! Even if it's only the TC, there has been schrapnel pumping through the rest of the transmission for who knows how long. Don't do all the work to replace the TC and NOT fix the trans.
