Hi all,
I was wondering on a 6.2L with a single battery is there any way to keep presets, etc. preserved during the swap to the new battery? Kind of like the 9V battery in the cigarette lighter trick of past days?
My sales person at the battery store had some contraption which he plugged into the 12V socket in the dash next to the A/C plug, but it didn't preserve any of my settings. So needless to say I'm puzzled.
TIA
I have a small light weight Lithium Car Starter that I keep under the back seat. I would connect it to the battery cables before removing the old battery to keep 12 volts in the system.
I have 2 of them. I keep in the truck and the other in the car. Bought first one 2 years ago. and the other one yar ago. I paid $67 for each of them.
It has been very handy. I used it power the RV Jacks when the RV Battery was dead, used it to jump start my riding mower, used it as a emergency light and cell phone charger when we had power outage after recent Hurricane Ian.
I charge it after each use and every 6 month or so to keep it topped off.
I have a NOCO10 that can act as a 12V supply and serve as a memory retainer when replacing the batteries. I bought it though to "permanently" hardwire to my battery though to use as a battery maintainer, however it seems that it is pretty versatile.

So when you use the NOCO10 simply as the memory retainer, how do you hook it to your battery since the cables have to be removed when swapping the battery for the new one?

If you’re using it as a memory retainer you would hook it to the trucks battery cables while swapping the battery, not to the battery. You can do this with the clamps on the NOCO. Just put it in the maintainer mode, connect the clamps to the battery cable before pulling them off the battery post, swap batteries and attach cables to new batteries and then remove clamps.
Are you sure that you need to worry about this? Just asking as it seems that many things retain their settings nowadays. If your battery goes dead, do you lose everything?

Like the one at the battery store, there are devices using 9v batteries available to retain your settings. They seem to run around $100 and they plug into the cigarette lighter plug.
I made own using LiCB A23 23A 21V batteries for about $10.00. IMO you should use 12V for a 12V system.
Most auto makers don’t shut off the cigarette lighter when the key is off, apparently the Ford Superduty does. That means that you need to connect it to the battery cable(s) to apply the voltage to retain the memory settings. You could also connect to the positive cable and any solid ground under the hood if that’s easier.
I had to replace the positve battery terminal clamp and I did not lose anything when the battery was disconnected. I'm sure I took longer than it takes to replace the battery. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. All my radio presets were still there along with the time.
FYI: I have pretty much the same truck, 2017, CCSB, 6.2, with a single battery.
