Everybody, there's a guy here in Phoenix parting out a 2004 F250 6.0 automatic 4x4 with a manual transfer case...which should be a NV271. I have a 2005 automatic (5R110W) 4x4 with ESOF (NV273). From my internetting yesterday, 6.0s always came with the 5R110W. True? If so, his TC should bolt up in place of mine, correct? I'm not a hardcore 4x4er, just want a manual TC.
I still don't think the trans even matters. It should be a 31 spline trans output shaft and Ford's 6 bolt round pattern they've used since the 70's. HOWEVER, verify before dropping your cash AND post back if I'm right OR wrong so I (and others) know.
I think the challenge for you is the proper shift linkage and lever and shifter bezel+boot
Keep your nv273, turn the know to 4wd once a week to engage 4wd for a mile or so while driving. Exercise the tcase motor/hubs and you'll never have a problem.
my 04 has 200k and all original hubs/tcase motor and it works flawless. I use my 4wd year round and in between I just flick it on to keep everything moving

I'm not familiar with the ESOF system. Is there a manual way of engaging the T-case if the shift motor die? Even if you had to crawl under the truck? I like a manual T-case cause even if my linkage were to fall off a can still shift the T-case, fairly easily, with pliers from under the truck.
what I have heard about is if the motor fails is sometimes hitting it with a hammer or whatever else will get it to work temporarily. I don't necessarily have a fear of it failing on me.....just like the old school look and feel of it i guess (I'm 52)....if i do it, ill change the hubs to Warn hubs, also....
to convert the 273 to manual with the Ford shifter and linkage will run between $500 and $600 with used ebay parts....so we'll see....
271 transfer case with case with shifter and linkage will be about the same if I have to change the input shaft if it came from a 4r100 transmission. The 5r110w uses a 34spline.....4r100 uses 31spline...ZF5 and ZF6 is conflicting info as to what they use.....
ill update this as whatever direction i go....
Happy new years!! I just found a kit for $150 that you hook up the manual shifter linkage to.....it's basically what others have done....just a little cleaner i guess...gonna order the parts shortly.....

Thank you for setting the record straight on 34 spline! Now that you say that I remember having heard it before but a lot of good that does when CRS kicks in.
.ZF5 and ZF6 is conflicting info as to what they use..
All ZF5-47 5 speed 4WD transmissions are supplied with the 6 bolt circular pattern and it will have a 31 spline output shaft.
Depending upon the year and transmission, Ford New Venture NV271F manual shift transfer cases will have one of three Input Shaft choices. 31 Spline input shafts were used for 1999-2004 models with 4 speed automatic transmissions and 1999-2002 trucks with ZF5-47 5 speed manual transmissions.
2003 and 2004 transfer case assemblies listed for 5R110 vehicles have 34 spline input shafts.
A 24 spline input will be found on 1999-2002 transfer cases in Diesel trucks with ZF6-650 speed manual transmissions. There were no ZF6 transmissions used in 1999-2001 V10 powered trucks. The ZF6-650 was used in 2002 only in V10 trucks.
2003 was the introduction of the ZF6-750 transmissions and a 34 spline output shaft for NV271's in both V10 and diesels.
The 34 spline input is used on all 2005-2010 Super Duty models with all engine and transmission combinations.
Having owned a 2004 F250 with the 34 spline NV271 manual transfer case and the ZF6-750 transmission as well as my 99 in signature that has the transmission I swapped from the ZF5-47 to a 2002 ZF6-650 24 spline output & NV271 manual transfer case. I believe from my research that all ZF6-750 transmissions are 34 spline output and ZF6-650's are 24 spline outputs. Easiest way to tell the difference between ZF6-650 and ZF6-750 transmissions is 750's have only 4 bolts holding the shift tower in place and 650's have 6 bolts. As a side note, ZF6's are 3.75" longer then ZF5's and swapping in a ZF6 in place of a ZF5 is pure a bolt in swap. Bolt holes are in frame rails for moving the crossmember back.
The 273 and 271 transfer cases parts are interchangeable at home with the only real special tool needed being a good pair of snap ring pliers. I put a 271 behind a dodge manual transmission for a Cummins conversion project by swapping out the input shaft (again, not difficult to do at home, so you can swap the input shaft out of your 273 into the 271 if the 271 you get happens to have the wrong one)
yup, I seen that thread the other day and there also is a video on youtube of a guy breaking down a 271....seems fairly easy....i'll probably just keep my 273 and convert to manual as i have seen others do.....there was a 271 with the linkage remove from a f250 at a good price....but i hesistated on what i was going to do and its pending sale now....

Converting a 273 to operate manually can certainly be done, the only potential downside is there is no neutral detent in a 273 shift mechanism. So if for whatever reason you wanted to put the transfer case in neutral, you really can't do that with a 273.
...
Years ago, my dad first, then I bought it iff of him, but a '76 Chevy with a 203 TC, and then later a '99 Chevy with a 241, I think...never once did I purposely go into neutral...not sure when it would be needed other than for towing or for a PTO.....
