Howdy, looking for a little help I just got my gpas ol 66 f250 running after 33 years of sitting it's got the 390 with a 4 speed manual. I'm looking for recommendations on a rear end swap to make it more of a cruiser instead of the stumpuller granny gears it has now.... thanks for your time any help would be greatly appreciated
Not sure what your current gears are now but I am in the process of swapping the 4.56 Dana 60 in my '64 F250 to a 3'73 out of a '68. I am upgrading the brakes as well in the process as the guts of the 68's drums were gone and this disc conversion will make towing more predictable. Mine has a MX Cruise-0-Matic now and I am hoping to get it more hwy friendly but still be able to tow if needed. It's my daily driver. I have heard a 4.11 is a good option as well but I was able to find this 3.73 local so that drove my decision, I wanted to keep my original rear end the way it was a just put it aside so swapping the whole thing was a better option for me.

The 390 swapped in at some point? Is it total stock? 3.54 even with a tall tire would be best for cruising.
I have a '66 with a 3.25 gear and one with a 3.50 gear both have factory 3spd overdrives. I have pulled a truck trailer with the 3.50 OD and it pulls fantastic even at 35mph in OD with 7000 plus lb behind it.
If you want good cruising and MPG 3.54 (tallest I am aware of for a dana 60) and a overdrive would be best.
3.54 gear swap. I added the Dana posi and chromemoly axles not needed for your application. Going with a OD may be a better but obvious more expensive to do option.
It originally had a 352 in it and my GPA had swapped it out. I want to make it a cruiser rat rod not gonna restore it just give it love and drive the crap out of it here are some pics...
I have 4.56 in my truck. and granny 4 speed. Put your numbers in here, and see what you get. https://spicerparts.com/calculators/...rpm-calculator
For reference, here's my experience:
T-18 tranny, so it's a 4 speed with 1st granny (non-synchronized). Ratios are 6.32:1, 3.09:1, 1.69:1, 1:1. If you have an NP435, you're ratios are a bit different.
34" tires. 4.56:1 rear end. 460 engine
With this set up, I start in 2nd gear on the road. Only use 1st for specific needs. 1st gear is non-sync, low geared compared with 2nd, and is a bit harsh getting out of, so to normally use 1st as a starting gear would be annoying. My 460 has plenty of torque to start at 0, without destroying the clutch, to about 27mph, shifting at 3800 rpm. Your 390 should offer good range as well, assuming running well with a mild cam.
This puts me hwy cruising roughly at 70mph at 3200 rpm
If you're going to change tire size, make sure you have that figured out before you decide on gears.

Dang Wayne, I can see how you would be incredulous about my 120 MPH 352. But with 3.70 in the nine, the overdrive, and 235/75/15's, by the time I hit 3200 R's I'm well into the 90's, with plenty of pedal left.

Fact is, on the hwy, the 460 CJ isn't ultimately limited by the tranny and gears, it's limited by the suspension and brakes. Doing much over 80 mph in the truck would be simply asking for trouble.
