How important in the windshield wiper cowl? Mine are cracking and pulling away from windshield. I doubt water is problem, but was not sure about leaves and other junk getting in there.
That one crack looks like a rock hit it, and the windshield.
As to its importance, I think it just keeps trash and leaves out, gives it a finished appearance, doesn't seal water out or anything like that.
If that were on the windshield of my 1970 MGB I would get a little DOT3 brake fluid on the finger of my gloved hand and very lightly apply just enough to make the rubber part shiny and deep black again. Brake fluid is formulated to do a number of things, one of which is to keep the rubber components of the brake system from degrading. Be warned, brake fluid eats paint in a major way. Go easy.
And after doing that every 6 months or so for a while, next time the truck needs a shop visit for something else I'd have it replaced.
It's a make shift solution, but it works. At least on 50 year old British convertibles. It's actually in the shop manual for the car.
One of Ford's better ideas. Had multiple rubber degrades around the windshield of my wife's explorer which mad "rattling" noises going down the highway. Replaced the cowl cover which fixed the problem. Easy 15 minute fix but frustrating that it had to be done on a 3 year old vehicle.
