I had to replace brake booster on my 1966. Now I'm picking my teeth out of the steering wheel. Even with careful application of brake pedal when it catches it hits hard. Not so before. A mechanic at shop I use said his Dad had one like that and he put some kind of reduction valve in vacuum line going to booster. Any one have experience with this situation? Thanks.
Using the tool, adjust the booster to MC rod. There should be a vacuum valve between the booster and intake. If you don't have one you need to install one and if you have one replace it.
I did adjust rod between booster and brake pedal to get right adjustment. There is no vacuum valve between intake and booster. That is what I was inquiring about. Is there a specific unit that I need to acquire. Thanks.
Google "brake booster vacuum valve". Your power brake system must have this valve installed in line between the vacuum source and the booster. They are available at all parts stores and online. Usually cost less than 15 bucks. After replacing the vacuum valve if the problem persists replace the brake booster. There is also the possibility that your brake pedal ratio is incorrect if you added a booster to a non boosted system? This can be corrected by mounting the brake pedal to booster rod lower on the brake pedal. Moving the pedal mount will lower the pedal closer to the floor where it belongs in a power brake system. I had this issue some years ago and I resolved it by drilling a new hole in the brake pedal and lowering the brake pedal mount. Google "brake pedal ratio" for a more detailed explanation.
