Optilube XPD is about the color of diesel, so I wouldn't expect it to change the filter's color any more than diesel does. Then again, with the tiny amount of BD FBC we're using, maybe it doesn't matter either.

Yeah, I don't recall the Optilube color that much since it was always in dark bottles, but the HotShots is about the same color as the FBC too. But none of it changed the color of my lower filter, and while it was the only one I have changed, some sort of additives were ran the entire time the filter was in place.

This reminds me though, I need to order some more of the FBC...

With how much any additives would be diluted in the fuel, I find it hard to believe any of them, no matter how dark they are coming out of the bottle, would discolor that filter media that much.

I tend to agree. The only counter argument is that the filter is in place for a couple thousand gallons or more of diesel, so that means a lot more additive. It's still diluted, but maybe that discoloration adds up.

I’ll also add that I used the lowest dose recommended for the OptiLube and the Hot Shots. IIRC, there are regular doses and “performance” doses.

But, the makeup of the filter media is meant to trap particulate matter, so to discolor from the additive would mean that there is particulate matter in it.
The media doesn't get stained by color, only discolored if some particles get trapped in it.

In that case, you would expect that import "stuff" in the additive would get to the engine, not get stuck in the filter. So the whole idea of additive causing discoloration may be wrong.

Diesel comes in four colors. Clear, Green, Red and Blue.

Just saying

I guess mine is a mixture of clear and green... LOL. Here's mine when I drained the lower fuel filter before changing it. It's "B20" with Hot Shots Winter and Better Diesel FBC additives added in. Of course the container it's in isn't exactly clear either though... But every time I have drained mine , this is the color it has been.

Most folks aren't running red or blue in personal street legal vehicles.

Right now I am! I am in north MS. The high today is 16! I know "cold" is subjective, but with the wind blowing right now we are at -4! That's cold to me! LOL

Surprised that the DIC on the truck does not indicate when to change the diesel fuel filter. Mileage is a poor indicator of when to change a fuel filter as it depends primarily on how many gallons of diesel, which is a very very dirty fuel, has been filtered by the media. Engine fuel consumption or the DIC which computes filter life based on how the truck is driven are better indicators.

Changing the filter more often than is necessary is not a good idea as the filter media is least effective when new and no loading has taken place. Even a fuel filter that is supposed to be 98% effective is going to let through 240,000 particles with each gallon burned and these particles will be hitting the injector solenoids at high velocity. Optimum would be to add an aftermarket fuel filter upstream of the factory fuel filter.

None that I am aware of. I switched over from Hot Shots EDT to their Winter Blend additive probably 5 or 6 weeks ago I'd say... once I saw that we would start getting below freezing temps I switched then and will continue to use the winter blend until spring time. I also get my fuel from a high turn over Shell station here in town that is only about 3 or 4 years old. I haven't asked anyone at the station if the fuel we are getting is "winter blend" (and I don't imagine they would know...) but I imagine it is. I just changed my fuel filters for the first time a month ago and like I mentioned, it looked like the new one at 15K miles.
