New 390 build
I'm a new member here and recently purchased a 55 F100 that came with an unknown year 390 and c6 trans. Couple questions for you: 1) does it make a difference what year the engine is once I've got it identified for when I'm looking for parts? 2) Other than the oiling issues I've read in the FAQ, is there any other simple fixes to make it more reliable? 3) What are some good mild/moderate parts combos to make it a reliable street rod? I'm not looking to take it to the track or anything, but I want to make it a healthy, stout runner for everyday driving and occasional showing off.

You can't go wrong with buying Barry Rabotnick's books on building FE powah.
1- Short answer on FE is no the year (s) of the parts don't really matter compared to the measurements. Crank, bore size, rod length etc.
2- I've seen and heard about oiling issues but simple enough to fix or avoid yourself. Some drill and tap the oil feed galley for the head to install a carb jet just to restrict the amount of oil fed to the top which leaves more oil for the rotating components. Cleaning up the ports on the block where the oil pump and oil filter bolt on is another very good idea. If you have die bits, cleaning up the radii and matching up those ports is gravy. Make certain to use "Right Stuff" on your intake manifold.
3- Parts combo really will depend on a list of factors; what is your rear end gearing? how tall are the tires? stock torque converter? what's your budget? what are the baseline parts you have i.e. crank, heads, rods?
