1953 F350 Build thread

Ok. This is the start of my build thread. Since it has been snowing and down in the teens now. I am starting on my engine. I found what I believe is a mercury engine. Heads had 8CM on them. I know that isn't the greatest way to tell if it is a Mercury or not. I hope to find the 4 inch crank once I get it on an engine stand. Here are some pictures I have so far. I will get more and add them once shop warms up. Mice made a nice nest in the valley! I haven't seen any cracks in the places I have read to check for so maybe I will get lucky.

YEP! I got PB blaster soaking right now. I figured when the puddle of oil is gone it is close to being ready to pull valves. Will probably let soak next whole week.

Automotive Paint Stripping & Derusting Services in Illinois | Redi-Strip (redistripco.com) I took some blocks long time ago. Had to leave for couple of weeks. What came back looked like fresh poured iron. I had them apart, not sure what they would accept if assembled, the process will eat nonferrous metals. Have to call and ask about a chunk. I sent a carb from an early 1900's gas engine I couldn't get apart, when it came back, it came apart like put together the day before. Hope they still offer the same service as then. The neighborhood it was in 35 years ago wasn't the best at the time, might want to check. OT but the body shop I worked at sent an entire 70 Mercury Cyclone body. What came back was so clean it looked like aluminum. I'm sure in the post EPA days things are more expensive.

Have you taken the pan off? I had a freebie a few years ago that I took apart; this one had a crack, but wanted to see what was salvageable. Oil pan was filled with mouse nest. Once sandblasted, it looked like Swiss cheese. The rod nuts were so corroded I couldn't get a wrench or socket to bite. I don't want to rain on your parade, but beware.

Also not trying to rain on your parade but that engine looks pretty rough and I certainly wouldn't pay for any one else's time on it before I was reasonably confident it's salvageable . As was mentioned the bottom end is very crucial . If you can do allot of the work yourself or you want to save that engine for some reason I would be pretty confidant you could find a takeout or rebuilt for far less than that one is going to cost .
