im doing a 302 rebuild and i have a question. is there some special chemical or solvent that i can use to clean all the carbon deposits and crap put of the intake manifolds? i have a wire brush type thingie but the crap is just caked on there. any help is appriciated!
Throttle Body and intake cleaner is the stuff, make sure you don't use carb cleaner because it will distroy the coating on the intakes innards to resist carbon build ups
Might consider taking it to a shop and letting the clean it, shouldn't cost much. Is it aluminum or painted? I used castrol super clean on my aluminum intake, I diluted it with a lot of water, to make sure the intake didn't turn white and it didn't. In my experience that stuff will clean anything. What I might do is get a big plastic tub fill with water and a little super clean let the part soak and you should be able to rinse with water and be done with it. Depending on how much crap has collected, you may have to aggitate it some. I can't stand the smell of intake/carb/brake cleaners so I use the castrol superclean as an alternative and it works great for me, should you do this diluting it with water is very important the wrong balance and the aluminum parts will/may turn white. Just a suggestion. It sounds like your making a good effort to do the rebuild the right way. Again, good luck with your project
sorry i miss read thought it was for the inside of the intake I'd also higly recomend Simple green automotive, its non toxic and works just as well as superclean and also smells nice
it is for the insides of the manifolds. im sorry, i should have said that in the beginning. i got the outsides pressure washed and i just need something to get all of that built up carbon and crap from inside. any other suggestions?
That is why I recommended soaking the intake. the product I mentioned will break up the carbon very effectively. Like myself and borin&strokin menitoned taking it to a mahine shop would be best and wouldn't cost much.
Are you taking pictures to document your build up? If you have interest I would view them to see how it is coming along, as would others I am sure. Should you wish to put them in your gallery or another link, let us know. Again good luck
