My rear defroster acts really weird, and I wonder if it's an issue with my truck, or just an undocumented functionality.
Sometimes the rear defroster won't turn on, but sometimes it turns on. It seems to be temperature-dependent, and fortunately in cooler weather like we are having now, it works every time.
Is this normal, or is my rear defroster going crazy?
I had the same issue with mine - until it quit entirely.
From my diagnostics and research I found the problem is a loss of electrical continuity between the three glass panels that make up the sliding rear window. Unfortunately the fix is to replace the entire rear window assembly.
Remember: even though the rear defrost indicator will not come on and the rear defrost does not work, the side mirror defrosters will still work.
Thanks -- makes sense that it requires continuity across the glass. I bet the more I work the rear window, the better it gets, since that wipes the contacts across one another and maybe cleans them a bit.

hmm.. just be aware there is a huge pattern of shattered rear windows because of the defroster. It can create local VERYhot spotsand shatter the glass. Sounds like yours is giving you fair warning.
2018 F-150 Lariat, Super Crew Cab. 2 of the 3 rear window defroster quit working recently, and they're not covered under my Ford Extended Warranty Plan. I took it to my dealer here in VA and the mechanics "diagnosed" it as requiring replacement of both windows! Now, I've never stacked anything up in the back seat that would have contacted the defroster grids, and there are no broken wires visible. The fact two of the window defrosters quit at the same time leads me to believe it's a wiring connection problem, not something requiring window replacement. Fortunately the dealership agreed to cover it, but it still seems like overkill to me. Has anyone else had experience with rear defroster failure, and how did you fix it? Thanks for sharing your experience/mechanical know-how for this system.

It is just a terrible design going on 10 years. Just be glad it didn't shatter. A heated sliding window is 100+ year old tech that they just can't get right. They could have made it right by simply having 3 separate feeds in parallel, with a well designed ribbon or coiled wire for the sliding portion. Those contact points are a bad design, period. I am thinking maybe that motorcraft 12V conductive grease on them may extend their life.

If you have Ford Premiumcare it is covered. I’d guarantee they’re entering the wrong part number. There’s a different base number they have to enter, if they use the actual number the system kicks it out as standard glass, which is not covered. You can call the number on your warranty paperwork and get the proper number. I used to have it on a post it on my toolbox because I kept having service advisors tell me “the customer won’t pay that pull it outside” to which I’d respond “why it’s just their deductible, run this number instead”
