Painting wheels
I just took delivery of some new custom steel wheels for my 66 F100 Shrtbed. They are raw metal and coated with some machine oil. Can someone instruct me on what I can clean the wheels with, how to prepare the metal for primer and so on. Thanks for any help.

Use a good degreasing detergent, like Tide in hot water, rinse real good. I recently got some advice from a friend of mine who owns a body shop on how to prepare bare metal for paint. He suggests using a metal conditioner (Metal Prep), first. Just follow instructions on the label. Then, prime with a "self-etching" primer. It is not necessary to sand self-etch primer before painting. You can then use two-stage or one-stage urethane paint. I used Du Pont Chroma One single stage paint out of an HVLP gun on my stuff and it came out great.

you can wash them off in degreaser or soap, rinse really well, dry, and primer them. The key is to not allow the water to sit on the bare steel for too long otherwise you will have flash rusting.
