Learned something. Those ratios weren’t available in later years for a good reason and aren’t mentioned in the aftermarket. Who would want a 2:xx in a truck?
T18 & T19 have the same ratios but the T19 has synchronized 1st gear
ZF transmission
I can’t imagine having that high of the ratio in a truck. No way I would have rebuilt it when I can go to the junkyard and get a better ratio to swap in its place. I went from 3.55 to 4.10 with a junkyard 8.8 and Dana 50 third member
Well knowing what I know now I probably wouldnt have rebuilt it. But I was driving 3-4 hours each way every weekend and enjoyed doing 75 at 1800rpm for that duration and for a while got a consistent 19-21mpg, and I honestly love the way it drives right now for an every day truck. But with a new car on the way I dont need to worry so much about fuel economy, and I still think I can accomplish what I want to with what I have and one of the above transmissions.
And with the T18 and 19, the only 2wd versions are the close ratio correct? I thought Franklin said earlier that the 6.xx gear was only in the gas 4wd.
It would be nice to get that kind of fuel mileage. The pickup and Broncos only get 14-15 on the highway.
The transmission information was from F150online.com. I just looked at Novak Conversions. There is no mention on either page of a gearing difference between 2wd or 4wd.

Three gearing options were available for the Ford T19. The T19 was available with a 6.32:1 first gear. These were only in rarer Ford 500-800 series HD trucks. The very most common T19 available in Ford applications was the T19A with the 4:02:1 first gear ratio. For two years (documented from 1983-1986+) there was a Ford T19 option with a 5.11:1 first gear. All ratios listed had a synchronized first.
We've learned that the 1983 to 1986 Ford T19's, as installed behind the 460 and diesel typically had the 4.02:1 first gear in a 2wd application, or a diesel 4wd application. However, 5.11 versions are reported also for these. The 460 4wd truck got the 6.32:1 first gear, purportedly from 1983 to 1986 F250's.
Oh wow I didnt know they did that, thats not a horrible price to pay if I cant find one cheaper in a yard. And they even have the 5.1 1st for 2wd which might be perfect, Thanks!
After looking more into the ratios and what RPM I normally shift at, Im more confident that the low gears of 6.xx wont be too bad. Shifting at 2500 is still about 13mph for me as opposed to like 29 with my current setup. Much lower, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting. And even with the 4.2 ratio of the t19 its around 20mph.
