My 2002 F-250 5.4L CCLB 4WD has some E-brake issues. For starters I have not changed nor have had the shoes replaced in years, more than 10 years. When I set the brake it rolls back and eventually grabs. However it could be better. O'Reilly's sells the shoes but they need to be ordered in ($70 for a set of 2). They don't sell a kit with springs. I want to attempt to change the shoes because I just don't trust it. When I take the springs apart I'll have to be careful as breaking a spring would cause problems. To be honest, not sure how to adjust them either. So, if you worked on your E-Brakes could you pass along some knowledge and wisdom?
Thanks,
PJ
Any idea where to get Ford Springs? I guess I can see if the Dealer still has them. Have you done the job yourself? So I need the shoes, springs and what else to do it right?
Yeah, I was just in there 2 weeks ago when I rebuilt my hubs to fix an axle leak. I bought new shoes from Powerstop but didn't end up using them since my originals still looked perfect aside from some diff fluid on them. I cleaned them up and called it good since they are just for the e-brake anyway. Ford sells the shoes as a kit but it doesn't have the springs (Ford F812-2648-CA).
The issue is if you DO plan on swapping the shoes and springs, you will have to remove the hub assembly. The Ford axle utilizes a cartridge style oil seal on the hub which will separate when you pull it off (its a one time use part). So then you'll deal with that if you decide to go that route. That seal is about $30 (Ford 2C3Z-1177-AB). You'll also need the special socket with 4 prongs to remove the ratcheting axle nut which is also $20+.
Anyway, I would start first by adjusting the adjuster. You can access it from the back without taking off the wheel. Now I am not sure which way you turn, but you'll want to turn it until the shoes start dragging on the drum (have your tire up off the ground).
