There is no detent, it is intended to be able to be 'bumped' into neutral from reverse or drive with just a tap on the shift lever (I used to work where these systems were engineered - it's a 'safety' thing).
However, if it is skipping you may need to adjust your linkage under the truck by the transmission. It is quite possible that after 18 years of service, your shift cable has stretched and there is some play there.
I don't know HOW to do it, as I've never needed to do it. But it can be done.

detent might’ve been the wrong word. It’s not easy to stop in reverse when shifting out of park. I’ll look into adjusting the linkage. Thanks.
edit: upon reviewing a shift cable adjustment procedure from 2014 models each gear position is referred to as a detent. So I did use the right word. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The detent is small/hard to hit. It skips right over to neutral if I don’t do it slow and carefully. Anyone know of a fix?
2004 6.0 with the 5(or is it 6) speed
But, to answer your other comment, your transmission is a 5R110W, it has 6 forward gears but only uses 5 of them at a time depending on how cold it is.

thank you for that. I looked up the adjustment procedure for that transmission and got it done. So far it seems to have worked but I’ve only driven it once. Now it won’t go into 1 but that’s ok, I don’t ever use that.
