2004 Ranger XLT with 4.0L V6 and 5-Speed manual transmission. Recently my "Check Engine" light came on. I took the vehicle to AutoZone to have the EEC-V system read and found the error code P0442, EVAP small leak detected. I first checked to see if the gas cap wan not installed properly, but it appears to have a snug fit. The next thing to check is "Canister Purge Valve", but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Does anyone have a photo of the "Canister Purge Valve" for the 4.0L V6 engine, or at least the location within the engine compartment?
If you already haven't, I would suggest that you replace your gas cap. Yes, it's possible that it wasn't on tight and snugging it up might fix your problem, but a replacement Motorcraft (no substitutes, unless it is NLA) gas cap is one of the first things to replace if there is a small emission leak detected. Next, I would try a smoke machine. This will help find your small vacuum leak. A few people have successfully made some homemade units, but any competent indy auto repair shop should have one. Avoid "just throwing major parts" at it.
Can't find anything that looks like that under my hood.
That's because you said you had a 2004 Ranger. That's what it looks like on a 2004.
If you had said that you have a 2002 Ranger (which I deduce is the case, given your other thread on this forum), I would have posted this picture instead (purge valve is #7):
Sorry! I'm not sure why I typed 2004 instead of 2002. It may have been rather late when I created the original post, and I may have been half asleep. But thank you for the updated information, it is very helpful.
