Long story short, last December I was driving and the engine just shut off. This truck has never given me any trouble before. I checked the obvious things and ended up taking it to a mechanic that has had it since then, He was able to get it running somewhat, but it is sputtering bad. It's got a new distributor, cap, plugs, wires, and radiator. I just got the truck back last night, so a little while ago I tried to start it up and it's running terrible. One thing I did notice was that you can hear it sucking air through the intake and I know it didn't used to do that. Suggestions?
Please give us a little more information. Engine size, auto or manual? First thing to do is to check timing, then fuel pressure, then check the codes. Or maybe do that first, your choice
Sorry about that. 5.0L automatic. The mechanic who has had it said that he checked the timing and fuel pressure, and they were fine. I don't have a code reader for that model though. I had one guy say that it could be a clogged cat. Thoughts?
No worries. And no code reader necessary, a paper clip will do. Or make a little jumper wire if you have a few inches of wire and a couple female spade connectors. Search the forum, there's a couple write-ups on how to do it and how to retrieve the codes.
Use a paper clip to jump these two terminals near the driverside hood hinge. Turn the ignition on. Count the check engine light flashes. Example: Flash-flash pause flash=code 21. Takes about 15 seconds for it to do it's self-test before spitting out codes.

I was able to get the code and it was 636. After looking that up, it is:636 (O,R) Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) sensor out of range - Transmissions
I'm not finding much online about how to swap it out, but I'm assuming it will require pulling the fluid pan. Any recommendations are appreciated.
before dropping the pan you can maybe ohm the temp sensor out cold, then run it and get it up to temperature and compare the 2 readings. I know someone should have the chart to check it. Yes the pan will have to be dropped to replace it.
A bad transmission temp sensor won't cause the problems your describing. Check your fuel pressure. The big auto parts stores lend out fuel pressure testers for free.
I haven't been able to do much with it in a while, but I did get a new PCM for it today and swapped it out, hoping that might help. Unfortunately, it did not. Here is a short video of the tach. Hopefully it will post on here. If it doesn't, the tach will for example go from 2,000 down to 500 RPMS randomly.
Ask your mechanic if he removed the spout when he timed it. If he didn't then it needs to be removed and timed again. If he ask tell him the SPOUT removes spark from the computer to set base timing at 10 degrees BTDC. When that is done and the spout replaced the computer takes over the timing for how it's programmed. A lot of mechanics don't know to remove the spout.
