Could be air in the fuel - usually picked up in the return lines and I notice you have 85 (?) could be the water separator) or could also be a nozzle (injector) taking a crap. You may have a lift pump going bad, not supplying enough fuel to run at top end.
If you still have the firewall mounted water separator, try letting the drain slam shut and see if that helps. If its anything else you will have to track it down by elimination. Keep us posted.

Just one cylinder missing won't even be noticable at the top end. I'd be thinking inj. pump. How many miles on it (the pump I mean)? An air in fuel problem should just make the throttle sort of strange (real snappy at first then sluggish right before it quits).

Did you pull the ring on the separator? If you did that's the problem. Pull the hoses off it and just hook them together with a piece off 3/8 tubing.

Usually a bad pump smokes blue. Where's the water, the main filter? I don't run a separator in mine, hasn't bit me yet.

Just filled it, huh. Sounds very suspicious.

i found a little in the filter it seems suspended. i think the best thing to do is put a new separator in and then try the truck. i have a feeling its the pump though.

drain some fuel from each tank and some fuel from the filter into seprate soda bottles or cups that are clear. let them sit over nite and llok in the mroing to see if ya can see water the water will seprate out and be clear. Ya say ya have not run the truc in a while if there is water the water will make it not run rite and the fuel will grow bacteria that will plug the filter up. If there is water but not to much change the filter put some conditioner in the fuel and keep the tanks full. If there is alot of water ya will ahve to flush the tanks out. I recomend no matter hwat yar problem is before leaving the truck sit for anylenght of time to fill the fuel tanks full this keeps water from condenstaing in the tanks.

I don't think it's water. Unless your filter is over half full with it, it's not going to slow you down much. Just change the filter and keep looking.

the only thing else i noticed was a broken tee fitting on the injection pump that goes to the trany modulator. i tried and blocked the fitting to no avail.

Ya might want to see if any local diesel shops or tractor dealerships have a hydrometer to test the quality of yar fuel. They take a reading and if it does not fall in a certain amount then ya have bad fuel that will give all sorts of trouble. Ima not so sure its bad fuel but that would be a quick way to elminate it as a culprit. I d also just look for stupid little things cracked lines t fitings etc. its proberly somthing little like that.
