I took the 4 bolt\nuts out then removed the nut holding the perch to the motor mount. After that a piece of 2X4 on the floor jack lifted the moter an inch or two. The perch then sliped right out. I had to do that several times until I had enough material removed from the perch to allow the new gear box to mount correctly.
Why would I want to do that? The vacant rail on the crank pulley and the water pump pulley are for the A\C that may or may not get added later. Because I was changing pulleys anyway I went for A\C style pulleys as a forward thinking measure.
Most all 390's with AC and PS have a 3 slot crank pulley and a 2 slot water pump pulley. The outside slot on the crank pulley is for the AC. The AC unit will have its own 3rd tensioner pulley.
The 2nd slot on the crank and water pump pulley are for PS.
And the 1st slot on the crank and water pump pulley is for the Alt.
I allways like to make a triangle belt setup, instead of a straight pull. Thats the way the Factorys do it too.
I bought a new power steering pump belt for the 72 F-100 and it is just long enough to go from the crank pulley to the power steering pump pulley. Because all the rails lined up and the belt fit I just figured I was on the right track. I bought 2 belts from 2 differant parts stores, different brand names but they were both the same size.
As for the cooler. It looks like mine was bent is shipping. I bent it back to open as much of the kink in the return line as I dared. I am looking for a replacement cooler and this should fix the kinked retun line and the cooler position.
Thanks for all the input. This web site is a great resource for these noble beasts. Keep up the good work everybody!!!
You must not have A/C. I have seen this way for non-AC trucks. Most cars have the belt go around 3 pulleys, triangle setup.
I think puts less strain/pull on the crank.
Cool. Nice truck too. I have only had my 69 F100 at the house for a couple weeks. I was looking around under it and saw this come-along strapped from the front left spring to the cross-member behind the tire. I thought what in the world is that there for??? Turns out that a previous owner added a power steering unit, and in order to fit it in, they cut the firewall out on the left side and somehow moved or affected the front spring.
All I know is that when I get me some manuals on this joker, I will have my hands full getting it fixed right.
Hmm, got to this post a little late.
Question, Iam thinking about converting to power steering as well, Just wondering, other than power st. pump and steering box, what else I would have to MOD. I have heard I might need a new axle that is power st. capable?
I have a '72 Body/frame and a '69 390. The 390 is set up the same as Merlins as far as the pulleys go.
Thx for any help making me decide either way. heh
Many good threads and pictures of completed swaps if you do a search. There are at least three different approaches. One would be to find an original power assist off of a 73-early77. Forget that, those are junk. I have seen the 2wd box used by boxing the frame and have been told it is fairly easy to do. Then there is the late 77-79 steering box transplant which isn't that bad either, I am told but those boxes a harder to come by.
You must not have A/C. I have seen this way for non-AC trucks. ......
It appears to have had add on A/C at some point. (Add on crank pulley and 2 holes in the firewall near the booster) But yeah you are right it is an Non-A/C from the factory truck.
