02 f-250 “Big Nasty” fuel gauge will read half a tank, which I believe, within the first few minutes then the needle will drop all the way down like it does when the key is off and the low fuel light will come on. After a few minutes of driving it sometimes goes to normal then cuts out again sometimes after the initial startup it just stays off not reading anything. Just looking for a good diagnostic path, hope it isn’t solder issues in the cluster. Can provide video if needed and if I can figure out how to post
My fuel gauge was erratic when I bought the truck in 2009. When I did the Hutch mod I cleaned the resistive part of the sender in the tank with electrical cleaner spray and I worked it back and forth a number of times (very carefully). I also cleaned and made sure all the spade connectors were tight. It worked like a champ and 13 years later it is still working like a champ, not even a momentary failure ever in all that time. One thing I'll note is that I tend to keep my tank full, I work off the top half instead of the bottom half, and I never park for more than a week without topping off. This may help too but can't say for sure.
The actual internals of the level sender for almost any Ford from the mid 80's on are the same. They all use the same resistance range and have the same size and shape. The only differences I've seen are some are a mirror image as in left or right, and the floats change to match whatever tank they are intended for. As long as you get the correct orientation then you should be able to swap it to your pick up tube and float.
