I've read all (OK a lot) of the Saginaw conversion threads but that's not what I'm looking for. I want to know why the Ford CII PS pumps are noisy. What is the engineering flaw? Can't blame it on cheap/poor rebuilds because even the new pumps off the dealers lot became noisy & whiny.
That's been a problem forever. I remember my parents Aerostar PS pump whining while my neighbors Astro Van was whisper quiet. There's a procedure in the ford maintenance manual about installing a special adapter cap and pulling a vacuum on the system to remove the air... I've never tried it.
Properly drain all old fluid, flush and fill correclty with the right fluid for your pump.
Done right there will be no air.
I did this procedure 5+ years ago, still quiet

The first sentence says it all, THE RIGHT FLUID. The recommended fluid for about all the Ford trucks in this section is type F automatic transmission fluid. I'm sure a lot of guys use something that comes in a container labeled "power steering fluid". That would seem like the right stuff but not when type F automatic transmission fluid is called for in the owners manual.
I see a lot of problems on here with worn gear boxes. I'm sure some of them may be just a misdiagnosis and the play is elsewhere in the steering system. But i'm guessing on most of the correctly diagnosed ones if they had used type F ATF the box may not have worn.

Not saying its true now, as this bottle was purchased about 5 ish years ago, but Supertech type F was honestly crap. I had used it couple times to drain fill the reservoir (black fluid) and did that countless times. By time I used 1 quart, i didnt realize I had another hidden somewhere so I bought new type F from another store. The fluid worked way better. The fluid was more quiet, and the pump worked better (So it wsnt as heavy feeling.) and it did not notice until I later tried to add that type f from the other supertech. (It slightly leaks from reservoir and old cap+vent plus I flushed again)
WHen I noticed, I relegated it to cutting oil. for fun I tried using it to drill metal on a drill press.
IT diddnt work as good even on that! just a funky odor and smoldered with some heat.
The "vavoline and "FRAM" type F seem to be "OK"
I use some seafoam trans tune to keep the system leaky free now and and to clean hydraul internals since it was nassstyy fluid and it also helps the leaks a tiny bit. it also conditions fluid that isnt quite perfect and makes it idek anymore but it doesnt make as much noise., I did also bleed and replaced cap when i could get the vent on the cap clear fully.
I have only worked with a few, C2 pumps have noise as a feature not a bug, I ddint know you could silence silence them... I Suppose a good amount are paid to say that!! lol just kidding

That is strange. The supertech type F ATF is all I have ever used in all my Ford power steering systems for about as long as I can remember. I assume you are talking about the supertech from Walmart. I suppose you could have gotten a bad batch.
Been using only Type F in PS pump for years. 293,000 miles. Original pump. Original steering box. Original hoses. No leaks but always had the typical Ford PS pump whine (but I've heard worse). Can't complain with that kind of mileage but Ford never should have let their pumps whine for 25 years of production. Problem should have been fixed immediately.

yes, its also the old label , before they stopped using the blue bottles(did they?) I would guess 2016 or 2017 date. I never purchased it but it was unopened Left a bad taste in my mouth, not literally.

The mercon v seemed ok
(in a diff ps use)
The Supertech type F is still in blue bottles unless they changed the color pretty recently.
Is Mercon V from motorcradt just as good if not better than Type F? It’s my understanding that type f is pre Mercon.
I don't know anything about Mercon V but I will use type F when it is called for. Type F is pre Mercon in Ford transmissions. The original Mercon, which was the same as GM dexron, started being used AROUND 1980 in most ford transmissions replacing Type F in most newly designed Ford transmissions. But the older transmissions before about 1980 still reguire type F ATF.

Mercon V and Type F would be , in a way, similar to using SAE 30 oil from 1967 in your 2010 mustangs engine. (assuming we had a time capsule, brand new)
wouldnt be good. Mercon V would be like the 2010 mustangs needs(Or something) but it would likely not work well in the 1967 engines because of compatibilities.
