I have a 1998 explorer, 90,000 miles, SOHC V-6. Problem is: when I turn it on it revs real high. Then it goes back down to about 1000 rpm for a second and then it almost stalls (or does stall sometimes) and continues to bounce back and forth between 1000 rpm and a sputter. If I put my foot on the gas it will pick up RPM a little but then want to stall again. Once I put it in drive and start going it drives fine, but will idle rough until it warms up. The problem gets worse with colder weather. I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and pcv valve recently. I also have cleaned the mass air flow sensor and ran EFI cleaner in the gas. The OBD II gave the codes PO300 random multi-cylinder misfire, PO171 System Too Lean Bank 1, and PO174 System Too Lean Bank 2. I have thought about replacing the mass air flow sensor but I am not sure that would even help. What should I Do? I dont want to take it to the dealer because the last vehicle I took there they ripped me off and i witnessed them doing burnouts with it in the parking lot. Thank You!!!
Your symptoms sound like you may have leaking intake manifold o-rings (gaskets) which is a known trouble problem for the SOHC engine. There is a Ford campaign for this (00M12) but you are probably past the mileage limit. Check this link:
My 1999 Explorer with 4.0 SOHC has all of the exact same symptoms. Once the engine warms it runs great. I also get the same codes (LEAN ON BANK 2) on the cold day starts (anything below 45 to 50 degrees).
I recently had a full tune up, replace the IAC valve, replaced the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY, and REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. ALL TO NO AVAIL!!!
Any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated.
Check the links I posted above. If you have leaking intake manifold o-rings, you will get the same symptoms described in the initial post in this thread. It is a known issue with the 4.0 SOHC engine.
Edit: Sorry, the second link doesn't work

Thanks for the info. These are my exact symptoms and given that i have replaced everything else the leaking "O" rings are most likly the problem. Is ther a service bullitan and procedure from Ford? I would like to do this repair myself but all I have is a Chiltons repair manual and it leaves a lot to be desired.
There is a Ford Owner Notification Program (ONP) for this problem along with the camshaft chain tensioners. The campaign is 00M12. If you have less than 72K miles, you should be covered under the campaign.
The problem o-rings are apparently the ones between the lower intake manifold and the cylinder head. There is a kit for the 00M12 that includes a new design o-ring to help solve the problem.
Dogfriend,
Thanks for the info. Looks like Mike H didia great job with the write-up. My 99 explorer has 116,000 miles so I'm sure Ford will do noithing but take my money. You know I never received a notice from Ford that this was a problem.
If I can get the Kit from Ford I think I can handle job. All I got to do is find a free weekend and a heated garage. My sons have got there project cars in by garage leaving no room.
FYI... Over Milage or unless you mention Campaign is 00M12 the kit will run you around $45 which is actually cheaper than having just the gaskets ordered from Napa/Advance or others...
Make sure all passages in the Upper Intake Plentium (If you can call that plastic POS that are open, if the IAC is acting up the passages under it can also be the problem.
