Transmission ?'s

So we have a 2003 F350 7.3 that has a transmission code of 9. Can someone tell me what transmission this would be as it needs a fluid and filter change. Also is Napa brand transmission filters good? and what fluid type should we use.

Thanks

If it’s the automatic then it has to be the only one offered for the 7.3 in ‘03, the 4R100. The original fluid called for was MERCON but that was later revised to MERCON V.
Personally I only use Motorcraft MERCON V and the Motorcraft filter on my 4R100. Any fluid that meets the MERCON V spec should be good though.

Then it has the transmission code of E, not 9.

What is the eighth digit of the VIN? It should be an 'F' if it is equipped with a 7.3L diesel.

Then your truck wasn't an automatic when it left the factory. Or somebody changed the tag.

as far as I can tell, it’s 100% from factory that way. What will the nine represent?

All 4R100s have overdrive.

I learned something new today. According to one article I found the gas engine trucks used door code E for 4R100, and the diesel used door code 9.

Yes, that's what I saw, too. I never knew that gas and diesel transmissions used different codes.
