Hey fellas! Quick question regarding the E99 up pipes. I ordered a set off eBay awhile back and they look really good. Thing is they did not come with a new collector/baby butt. Looking around I don’t think any of the other kits out there do as well for the E99… L99-03’s do though.
Do I reuse the original collector? (Assuming I can even get the bolts out of it!).
I don’t think the stock collector will work with these up pipes. What am I missing? Thanks again for any help,
i bought a set of droman bellowed up pipes for my e99 when the originals began leaking. one thing i read about that brand was that the bolts that came with them were too long. i pre fit the pipes into the collector and cut the bolts down accordingly. didnt see that you listed the brand of pipes you bought so just throwing that out there.
Thanks dsrace. I think the brand was swag performance or something like that. They look really nice and I don’t remember paying too much for them. I’ll have to dig them out of the shed and look closer.
Will double check bolts before the install just in case. Thanks again.
If the unspeakable does happen and you're staring at a a broken fastener in your collector, save yourself any hassle and just head to the parts or hardware store for some cobalt drill bits. I lost half a day and every smallish drill bit I owned on a stainless bolt someone had installed at some point along the road. Those cobalt bits are some sharp cutting SoB's. They're brittle so you gotta be careful how you use them, but they will cut nearly anything.
Weld nuts on the bolt heads to remove them from collector. Try backing them out while HOT from welding and if that doesn’t work, invite oxygen and acetylene to the party to heat up bolt and collector before removing bolts.
Breaking bolt off in collector is a nightmare. My success rate in drilling/tapping these bolts is very, very poor. New collectors were available last time I looked, but it’s always nice to avoid that expense.
I looked for pics where I’ve welded nuts on collector bolts like this, but couldn’t find them. Pretty sure I posted pics on here with a caption like ‘not today Satan...’
