Got an 82 E-150 with the 300 six, Started backfiring which fails the emissions test. If i disconnect the smog pump, the backfire stops, so i know it's the diverter valve. The valve itself works fine when i apply vacuum to it, but when i attach a vacuum gauge to the line going to the valve, it never seems to let up when it's supposed to. Vacuum lines all appear to be hooked up correctly, and i don't have any leaks. There is a check valve on it's vacuum line that works fine, but then there's also this thing, with part number D6TE-aa on it, It doesn't appear to do anything, and if i look into one port, i can see straight through it. Does anyone know what this thing is supposed to do? Or why my diverter valve won't open when it's supposed to?
So those early ones ('82 six pop with a Carter YFA carb) would backfire if the carb was too rich and the exhaust got loaded up with unburnt fuel
They would also backfire if the TAD solenoid was faulty
The thermactor needs to fart the air off when cold
There is a lot of diagnostics to be done
Grab yourself a 1982 truck emissions manual and a hand held vacuum pump with a gauge
That system was basically the same for years and years and years
