I am traveling cross country this winter and becoming paranoid about EGT sensors. I replaced #4 with no problem after it threw a CEL. The big question is: Should I replace the others? I do not want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with my wife, dogs, and traveling gear, with an EGT issue. The truck has 130K miles of easy no tow highway driving, the #4 CEL was the first and only CEL it generated.
From what I've learned since being here, in the old days when the 6.7 Super Dutys first came out, an EGT sensor fault would cause the truck to go into limp mode. But I'm thinking the latest software updates prevents that and allows the truck to still drive with that CEL. I'm sure someone with more knowledge and experience will chime in.
i would no worry about it. it is fine to carry a spare should you need it but it won't stop you from your trip these days, so get a spare, throw it under the rear seat and enjoy the trip.
someone needs to invent a dummy plug with preloaded resistance that can be connected when the egt side of the road thing happens. the dummy plug should have normal egt resistance when hot so that the PCM thinks all is well.
Bullet what year of truck are you driving? I have not even thought about EGT sensors since I sold my 2011 truck. My newer 2015, 2017 and 2020 have never had a problem
