I have an 88 F-150 4x4 302, C-6 tranny. College in soon coming and this will involve 8 hour drives
at around 70 mph. I don't have a tach on my truck, but I know that the engine is gonna be spinning at hellish speeds for a long time. The question that I have is would it be much trouble to have my C-6 replaced with a E40D or another transmission with an overdrive gear. I really don't want my engine spinning at the speeds that I think it is spinning at, also I think that overdrive would save me alot of gas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any input.
I think the "group" will need more information. Look on the inside of your drivers door post and give us the axle code off of the plate. Also what is the diameter of your tires or at least an accurate height from the ground to the top of the tire? I will tell you in advance that your C-6 on the average is more trouble free than the overdrive units...especially if used when towing.
I have to agree with Deen, the C-6 tranny is a very tough dependable tranny. Its also cheaper to rebuild and should drasticaly outlast the E4OD.What is your axle gear ratio? If you think you are to high reved at 70 MPH I would suggest a gear ratio change, before a tranny swap.As Deen also mentioned send your Tire size in actual inches off the groung and with your present gear ratio I can compute your current RPM, or the calculated RPM of a proposed gear ratio swap.

I have a 3.55 rear axle and am running 265.75R15's
I do some heavy pulling and your are right on about the C-6. It and my 302 pull our Case 1840 skid steer and 2000 pound trailer(12,560 GCVW) better than my Dad's 93 F-150 Ex Cab 4x4 351 E4OD 3.55 265.75.R15's
You shouldnt have as big a problem as you think. With your current set up 265/75R(aprox 30") and 3.55 gears you should mathematicaly be turning 2585 RPMs at 65 MPH(or 2840 RPMs at 70 MPH).That should be well within your engines limits. In fact you would be geared almost to high to get any use out of the OD with your suggested tranny swap. You would be down around 2000 RPMs at 65 while in OD,meaning you would probably be down shifting constantly on any hilly terrain or with any load.Towing in OD will quickly deteriorate your torque converter, and potentialy ruin your tranny,so you are right back where you were. You might want to install a tachometer just to monitor you engines performance. Its also a lot cheaper than swapping a tranny,or front and rear gear ratios.Sounds to me like youve already got a well set up rig for what you use it for.

Just to add to the good advice from Jeff: my F-series owners guide shows your GCWR towing capacity at 11,500 pounds with your 3:55 gearing which also is identical to your Dads 5.8L. Other than that for what it would cost you to change front and rear gears or the thousands it would cost for an aftermarket overdrive you would be better off buying an inexpensive small used car (yes, keep the truck) for your college trips. As an example: a 1992-93 Geo Metro sells for around $2,000 and gets 40 to 55 MPG depending on engine.
I'd rather spend money on gas that be seen driving a car, I'll wait a few years and get a Diesel truck.
I just can't wait to answer the question to ..."what do you drive?"
The "Power Sroke" Diesels are awsome engines,we have them on a couple of our company trucks, for hauling tools and materials. The towing power is great, the mileage makes me enviouse(except that my company buys all my gas). But in an off road High Performance Truck, the Big Block high Horse Power is addictive.I realize that for what you use your truck, the Power Stroke would be the ultimate truck,(huge pulling power and affordable fuel cosumption),not to mention they are just very well engineered trucks.I just thought I would put in my two cents worth.
Hey dont forget to consider installing a tachometer, they really do help you monitor your engine,s performance.
