Junkyard LSDs

Hi,

I was thinking of hitting a few local auto-recyclers to see if I can't find a factory LSD out there. My question is, my truck's axle code reads "25", which according to the axel decoder chart in the tech section indicates a 4.10 gear set. Does this mean that I would be able to work with only LSDs out of similarily geared differentials (so I'd be looking for an axel code of "h5" or "b5" for example)? Or could I just snag any unit out there?

Thanks
walter

Just as a follow-up to my own post...

I'd really appreciate any advice/concerns regarding this whole salvage yard LSD thing. Anyone done it before? Any luck?

Should I just take home the whole 3rd member?

If it seems like I don't really know what I'm talking about, I probably don't. Feel very free to set me straight.

thanks again

If you have a 4x4, you must either get both front and rear axles changed, or get the same ratio. Look in your owner's manual for the codes you need. Also keep in mind that the junkyard might have a pile of axles for you, so you need to look at the axle tag to determine the ratio. There are lots of posts on here about how to read them.

If you do change ratios, keep in mind that it will affect your towing capacity, fuel mileage, and seat-of-your-pants power.

Also, a junkyard LSD might work and might not work. You probably won't know what truck it came out of, so you will have no idea on the mileage. Count on changing the fluid at the very least, and possibly doing brakes, seals, and rebuilding the LS unit itself.

Whoops! Sorry about that. When I hit the 'submit reply' button, I got a php error, and didn't realize my response was being posted anyway.

Thanks, I actually didn't realize that you'd have to keep the ratios the same. Now that I think about, it's plain as day.

Would have been interesting otherwise...

Why not just replace the carrier and put your ring gear onto it?

I had a track-lok in my 78 but the carrier cover (or "hat") broke. I found a replacement open 3rd member with 31 splines for $50 at the local boneyard. I removed the carrier, replaced the spider gears with a mini-spool, put my original ring gear onto it, and reinstalled it in my truck. Works like a charm.

Hey, that's smart. A lot less work too.

I've got two questions though:

1. Do I have to make sure that I've got the same spline count in the new 3rd member as in the original? And if so, is does the i.d. tag on the diff tell me the spline count (assuming I can find the codes)?

2. Did you put the Trac-loc back in, or did you replace it with the mini-spool. Or am I just confused here?

Thanks for the tips

Yes, the spline count has to be the same, unless you get new axles. There are splines on the end of the axle that "plug in" to the splines on the side gears of the carrier. A 28 spline axle won't fit in a 31 spline carrier.

The dif tag doesn't list the spline count that I know of. You'll have to pull the axles out and count them. It wouldn't be a bad idea to take the axle with you when looking for a new carrier. It's a real pain to sith there with a pen or pencil trying to count the tiny splines 3" down a dark hole.

2. Did you put the Trac-loc back in, or did you replace it with the mini-spool. Or am I just confused here?
It had a track-lok carrier in there when I bought it, but the cover for it broke. I couldn't afford $150 for a used track-lok carrier so I got a used open carrier. I removed the spider gears from the open carrier and installed the mini spool. I took the track-lok out of the 3rd member and replaced it with the mini-spooled carrier. I had to change the ring gears because the one I got had a different ratio.

Hope that clears it up.

Yep, that clears it up. Actually, your first post was clear now that I read it again. What you did is pretty much what I'm gonna try and do.
Thanks again.
