Tranmission fluid
I have a 1998 4.0 Ranger with the automatic transmission. Today I was doing some winter prep work (Painting the frame, touching up paint chips) and when I checked my tranny fluid I noticed it had shifted color since the last time I checked it. It was a nice pink color about 1- 2 months ago and now it has shifted toward the light brown side. The truck has 73,000 miles on it and shifts fine. Is it safe for me to change the tranny fluid or do you think it might kill the tranny?
Thanks for your insight,
-Phil
From my own experience changing trans fluid is a must every 50,000 klm or 30,000 miles. The brownish look will get worse with mileage and it might end up with a nasty bill from the repair shop.
In my case every time I did it, it helped the transmission shift better and I hope for a long time. My truck has 325,000 Klm (almost 200,000 miles) on the odometer.
