I notice there are many different axles and gear ratios that were put in these trucks from the factory. Does anyone know if one axle code was more common than the rest or were all of these pretty much evenly split during production? I assume at least a few were special production models.
I don't have any numbers to back up my claim...but...in the last couple decades as I bought drove and sold these trucks I found many of the f150 4x4 to have a 3.5 to 1 ratio and the most common I have found in 2wd f150 is 2.75 to 1.
I am sure others more knowledgeable will also have their opinion, maybe if more members would tell you what they have found over the years you would have a idea.
Any idea if limited slips were the norm or were most open?
I would say that most were open, although limited slips do show up once in a while. Front limited slip from the factory is pretty rare.
I can only speak of the half ton trucks...I know next to nothing about the 8-lug trucks, but I would say that the two most common gear ratios were the 3.00 and 3.50 in the 9" rear diffs between 1980-1982, and then 3.08 and 3.55 in the 8.8 diffs from 1983 and onward. From 1980-1982, when the 9" rear diff was used exclusively, there were quite a few different ratios, even excessively tall ratios on the fuel saver models (like 2.47:1). In 1983, when they switched from the 9" to the 8.8 diff as standard, they were usually either 3.08 or 3.55 geared all the way through to the end of 1996.
The 9" rear end did show up on some trucks until at least the end of 1986, maybe longer I'm not sure. There were two specific combinations where the 9" was still used, and one of them was when a 302 and NP435 were matched, and I believe the other was with a 351w and auto. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong on that, but I believe those are the two common setups.
