Hi, I got a 1982 Ford F100. I'd like one day to pull my 300 and get a V8 in my truck. I love the 300 but I want around 400 hp. Which would be a better engine for the 400 hp mark, the 351W or a 460. I know the 460 is a heavier engine and it also is a much tighter fit in the engine compartment. I've always like the big block 460, my uncle has one in his 1970 torino. It sounds awesome. I've looked at the 485 hp 460 from ford racing and it goes for around $5400. Could a 351W be built for less than that? Or could I build a 460 myslef for less than that? Any advice helps, thanks. Fred Oh by the way I know that im gonna have to change the trans and all that could stuff to handle all that power.
As a suggestion you might call a local machinist in your area that does race motors or at least a reputable machine shop. Get some prices on what they might charge to do a block with your desired hp, ford racing is very expensive in comparison to other longblock prices, however the benefit is everything is standard bore and new which kinda matters but not really if you have a good machinist and quality parts. No doubt you can beat $5400 for a 400hp small block and that would include their doing the assembly and including all the little parts like intake, fuel pump, carb, distributor, etc. A big block would be a little more expensive than a small block but still cheaper than $5400. ONe benefit to the big block is it can make more hp easier and remain dependable not that the 351 won't be dependable but the Big block could use a milder cam and make just as much hp. If your gonna do the swap might as well go big do the Big block. IF your hooked on your uncles BB car then you should go for it, nothing like a bb sound and performance. Just my opinion, Good luck with your project
