I just picked up an '87 parts truck with a 460, no carb, no distributor. It has a 4 barrel intake manifold on it, but thats as far as I looked, as I haven't really had to time to dig into it yet.
Its an automatic, but 2wd. This 460 will bolt right up to my bronco's c6, right? (351m) I know I'll need motor mounts, different headers, etc.. but I'm no where near that stage yet.
I don't know what condition the engine is in other than what i've said thus far, so where do I start? Buy a carb and distributor and try to get it running? (I'll have to buy them sooner or later, so I don't see what it could hurt...) I'm looking at getting at least 400hp out of it when its all said and done, which shouldn't be too big of a problem. The truck is mostly a trail truck, so I'm not looking for 700hp at 8000 rpm or anything like that.
leave it in the old truck ,change the oil ,prelube the motor with a drill and socket on the oil pump shaft ,pull the plugs squirt some oil into the cylinders, then turn it over do a compression test and go from there if it,s got good compression then find a distributor and find a carb I know the 86 460 came stock with a Holley 600 vacum secondary carb
I would if it was my motor as it hasen't ben run in???? I would use Rotella SAE 15W-40. This oil is what a lot of people recomend for braking in cams so you don't damage the lobes. It has more aditives than "gas" oil.
Good luck
Bill
just ordered compression tester and crank socket from summit, can't wait to tear into this 460 after I get the rear out of this truck and under the bronco.
I found some pretty recent things in the truck and a note saying 'this truck isn't abandoned, don't tow it'.... looks like it got towed to an impound lot and some parts stripped off, guy that sold it to me got his body panels and then wanted it out of his driveway.. i MIGHT luck out and have a good engine (i doubt it, but i can dream.. haha)
Something doesn't seem right. I thought in 87 the 460 went to fuel injection. Does the "carb" pad look like it should take a spread bore carb with a divider running front to back to make it a dual plane? I don't want to be the barer of bad news but you might not be able to run a carb on it. Kind of like this one...

I'm not 100% sure on the 460.
I thought they followed suite with the 351W though. The 87's were carbed and the 88's had FI.
I'm thinking anyway. Like I said, not real sure. A friend has an 87 f-350 4x4, with the 351W and its carbed. I had a 88 Big Bronco 351W and it was FI but still had the C-6 behind it.
