I recently purchased a 2003 Ranger with the 4.0L engine that appears to have the Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant (yellow-colored). I'm well aware that you usually can't mix coolant types, but I'm wondering if after a good flush of the cooling system, if I could run it on a 50 - 50 mix of distilled water and the ethylene glycol Prestone (greenish colored) antifreeze that is usually so readily available in Walmarts and other auto parts stores. Prestone claims "Recommended for all vehicles makes, models & years", but I've heard or read that there are some exceptions. Looking for some knowledgeable feed back. Thanks!
i only run what it came with.
when the water pump on my 02 went on the road they did not have any gold and filled it with green.
the truck ran hot. i did a full flush and wash of the system and refilled with gold.
6 years now and not 1 issue.

Thanks, point taken. Do you know how the gold is different than Prestone? For example, Prestone is ethylene glycol based.
no, i never paid any attention to the ingredients.
my 99 diesel had green. the 2000 gas, 2002 diesel and 2004 gas had gold, and the 2014 6.2 gas had red.
dealer said the 2014 could be either red or green, but mine had red in it.
my 2018 explorer with non turbo 3.5 V6 has gold in it too.

OK, thanks for the info and you mentioning your 2014 has red in it, brings me to another question. I didn't know Ford had red coolant. After closer inspection, my 2003 4.0L Ranger has red coolant, not the gold I first thought. I'm hoping that it is compatible with my 2003 cooling system. The PO had a shop replace the radiator back in March and that's what they put in it. They claim that it is Ford spec. but, I don't know! Wonder if anyone knows the difference between the Ford Gold and Red and if it's ok in my 2003.

I used to have a 1994 Explorer, and after I bought it I did a routine coolant drain/flush and refilled it with the "universal" type coolant. (Not sure if it was Prestone or some other brand.) It wasn't long before I noticed green gunk floating around in the coolant. I drained/flushed again, and refilled with old style conventional green coolant. No more problem. So now I'm particular about using ONLY the specified type. The only exception: I thoroughly flushed my 2000 7.3 diesel and filled with heavy duty diesel extended life coolant. I figured it would be OK since Ford changed their spec I think in 2001. Haven't had any problems with it.
Anyone else experienced gunk in the coolant while using the universal type?
