And it is not backwards compatible into R134a systems. R134a is still readily available to *most* folks (except where the environmental wackos have taken charge). In those areas, an appropriate license is required to purchase so the general public is shut out. Elsewhere, it's available but has gotten more expensive. Last year a 12 oz can was $6 at my local Walmart, this year it's $10.
some states 134A is illegal. you must use 1234yf
it will work in 134A systems, but the system must be flushed just like the old R12 systems must be flushed to use 134A in them.

No. R134a is NOT "illegal" in any state. Some states and municipalities restrict the sale of the small cans of R134a to the general public but licensed techs (608 or 609) can still buy in bulk. Washington state is in its own special hellhole regarding the small cans. IIRC, Wisconsin restricted such sales starting a long time ago.
R1234yf is approved by EPA only for new installations. It is NOT approved (or even recommended) for any retrofits.
Ford started using R1234yf in the F150 back around the 2017 model year. IIRC, all highway vehicles for use in the US were supposed to use the new stuff by 2021, give or take a year or so.
