Importance of fuel bowl filter/spring

I’m missing the fuel bowl inlet filter spring. I know I can get them online etc, but with the use of inline fuel filters, I was just wondering if the filter here was even necessary.

I'd say that one is good to have but not really needed if you have a in-line. Just depends on how fine a particle the in-line will stop.

I was thinking the same thing the other day as i am dealing with a bogging issue. Would the presence of this 'clump of BBs' filter in any way impede fuel flow even if i have a new in-line filter? Also, as i recall, removing the fuel line from the base of the carb was a PITA.

I would also think you can remove that sintered brass filter and run the engine and see how the truck performs. I'm sure it will run fine without it.

Soybomb, what engine do you have ?

Last year my 302EFI was bogging down when I gave it gas, to me it was obvious it was a dirty fuel filter. I replaced the under cab filter and the truck runs great..

I bought a new one because I knew the old one was going to break when removing it. If you can open yours, if your truck has this one, NAPA has a good element for around $12.00

I've always removed that filter and any other one that attached to the carb and replaced them with an inline filter. I've never had nay trouble after.

THIS! Getting a wrench in to remove it was a challenge.

Sorry for going silent on this Max. I have a 351W and don't believe i have one under the cab like the one in your pics. The PO installed a see-thru inline filter by the fuel pump which is great bc it allows me to monitor any crub accumulating. For now i am going to swap this out when necessary and not let the tank get too low before refueling. My hope is that the constant intro of new fuel will allow the filter to do its job more betterer.
