Body Work Solution

Does anyone have a solution for correcting rust through in this area highlighted in the photo. It’s located between the drip rail and the top of the windshield. Any thoughts, ideas or personal experience would be greatly appreciate. Thanks

You are not gonna like the response, but…different cab. The amount of time, effort and frustration to rebuild that area (and make it fit/look good) will be better spent to find a less rusty cab and swap.

Cabs with a solid top half are out there. They will all have some floor rot, unless redone or a Southwest truck.

Sorry for being so blunt, but that is a super complex area to fix.

You may can find a old pro, or if you take the time to research it your self , fill it in with lead I have seen it done. An old timer or hip dude who knows some tricks may can help fairly reasonable. It does not look hard just do not breath in the smoke and take your time !!!!!!!!!!!

Like Cbrown said your only option is to replace the cab. It would cost 10 times as much to try to repair it. Call the places in the links both say they have a cab. There are more than this, these are just close to NC. If you guys would put your location on your posts it would be a lot easier to help.

Thanks for all the responses and confirmation. I was feeling a cab replacement was going to be the best prescription also but hearing it and reasoning through decision like that is a huge help. Thanks again. I’ve since found a donor cab in Pittsburg but going to check out Whites from the link above👍, thanks for that too, before making the trip north.

Once I’ve got the donor cab I’ll start prepping it for the swap but for now I’m getting differing opinions on making the entire cab swap or cutting the roof off and making a repair. I know the cut and weld has to be riskier but I hate to loose the originality of the old cab not to mention the VIN. Thoughts, comments?

SAdly, at White's at least you won't find a perfect cab, all of them have rust at the floors, cab mount and running up the base of the A pillar. You'll have to chop the top and there's plenty of those there. The only way to find a perfect cab is to find a low mileage babied one that was in a rear-end accident or one from the southwest, probably. Now that I see the rest of the truck, you might want to try to repair. The rest of the cab looks pristine. Cut out the parts where the rust is only and replace with just that especially since it is a two-tone you won't have to touch the main cab body and paint.

I would take it to a few body shops and get a quote on Estimate costs. Unless you are a confident welder. The replacement roof has to be mounted in the correct spot so there is no problem reinstalling the windshield.

Agreed, would not try this yourself due to fit perfection needed.

Good morning, hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving. Was curious to see if you could direct me to a link with step by step process for making the cab swap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- Thanks, Todd

Not a complete list but the swap itself is just carefully disassembling, swapping with a crane (various methods you can find by searching for "Remove a cab") and reassembling.

Some variations that I am aware of for 1970 are to ease the process make sure you have a donor that is the same:
  • Engine I6 vs V8 otherwise you have to fabricate the connection on the firewall for accelerator linkage
  • Holes for the trim for installation of trim clips--tough to get since you have the bright trim around the roof and belt
  • A floor shift cab if yours is currently or if you plan to change transmissions
Sorry I can't be of more help, I've never done one before, just saw plenty of posts of folks who have. There's a number of more detailed narratives out there if you search the forums a bit more.
