Seems there is a kit with hoses and elsewhere someone sells just the pump. Are hoses needed (or recommended) if I want to upgrade to a pump with a filter?
Depends on what else is done I think. I know I got new silicone hoses when I did the diesel site pump swap. I also installed a billet thermostat housing too which I think required a different hose.
The silicone hoses are pricey, but should last forever on the truck.
Leo, if you're referring to the IH T444E water pump that has the filter built in, yes it requires different lower hoses due to exiting on the passenger side instead of the driver side. I believe folks doing this DIY with an IH pump were piecing it together with hoses from a Dodge application. The part numbers I found when I looked into this a long time ago were Napa part numbers 8763 for lower and 8825 for upper. Upper hose would be different due to IH pump having a shorter stem. Here's an old but good thread I used for reference back when I was researching this:
For what it's worth the kit from DieselSite can be ordered with one of those silicone hoses mentioned above that has the T-fitting for the overflow bottle already it it. It's more expensive than the DIY approach, but it solves the problem of sourcing hoses and fittings.
