96 460 engine build

96 F250 460 MT
The miles are getting up there, and the engine is a little tired....thinking about doing a full engine build. Fresh bottom end, aftermarket heads, cam, ignition system and intake, and ditching the stock EFI for something like a Holley Sniper.
My question is, what's not going to work if I do this? Speedo? Other gauges? Can I make the factory tach work?
What other problems would I have that I'm not thinking of?

Speedo gets its speed signal directly from the raw VSS signal. So it'll still work. Tach gets its signal from the ignition coil, so that'll still work. Cruise control will work. All your gauges go directly to the sensors on the engine, so that'll still work. Your CEL light wont work because thats controlled by the ECU. Fuel pump will need to be reconfigured since its controlled by the ECU. The most difficult part will be to remove all the now-redundant wiring from the wiring harness. That'll take alot of time and patience to figure out.
Have you considered keeping the OEM EFI and just upgrading the system. Four Wheeler Magazine did a real good article on their results to get more HP from a 460. http://performanceunlimited.com/projectmpg/

I have...been looking at this setup as well. They've got heads & cam that's supposed to work with the stock EFI.

I did a complete teardown and rebuild on my 460. Bored .030 over. New pistons, rings, hotter comp cams, deleted air injection, Banks headers into their 3" Stinger exhaust, with magna flow catalytic converter. Every single thing in the motor has been replaced, or rebuilt. Kept the factory EFI, and put in rebuilt injectors. Truck runs great. For simplicity, I would recommend keeping factory EFI. It works well. Save yourself the hassle.

Did you do anything with the heads besides normal overhaul stuff?

Not really. Just a valve grind, and removing broken studs. They are pretty robust heads. So most of my performance upgrades were in the cam and headers.
