Has anyone ever had the need to replace the positive cable from the starter to the battery? What about the negative cable that runs down and is grounded to the frame? I was having some issues with the starter and I was trying to rule out some things. I am going to replace the old style 'smash and crush" terminal contacts with the "lug" style. But I was curious if anyone went as far as replacing 20 year old cable just because.......
Never replaced but had to clean corrosion on the starter stud to eliminate an issue. Nickel never seize on the lugs is great for eliminating future corrosion.
I replace battery cables in cars when I measure voltage drop due to corrosion (which is typically unseen to the DIYer). All depends on environmental factors and age.
If you see ANY corrosion on the cable, replace it. Corrosion is like an iceberg, you only see a little bit of it.
I usually remove the cable in question and take it down.to my nearest farm and fleet store. Find a cable as long as the one you're replacing and at least as thick. Thicker is better if you can't find the same size. Color matching is always good, unless you want to provide some measure of anti-theft protection by screwing up the color code.
