1949 F-1 speedometer issue

Speedometer keeps “ eating” the replacement cables I install. Connection to transmission is fine as I can visually see cable turning with speedometer end in cab

Once attached to speedometer, the cable is “ eaten” by the speedometer ( destroying the tip.)

Seems the speedometer is frozen !!

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Welcome to FTE. It sounds like you are not getting the cable properly seated in the back of the speedo. Take your question to the "Older, Classic and Antique Trucks" section. There you will find an entire group dedicated to the F! series trucks.

Don't forget to join you Maine state chapter too.

Thanks!

How do I get to Older /Antiquesection and to Maine Chapter

I did check how the “ seat “ was even to the point of taking a salvaged tip and measuring depth, compared it to new, then with it in my screw gun tried to activate speedometer. A lot of hopping and flutter, but nothing otherwise.

thanks for listening. I appreciate it

. . . agree, and/or that the guts of the speedometer are hanging up inside in the right conditions.

It's about 30% of the way down the main forums page, and can be found with this link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum7/

Your truck would be best supported in the "1948 - 1956 F1, F100 & Larger F-Series Trucks" forum, second from the bottom in the Older, Classic & Antique Trucks section.

The "Maine Chapter" forum can be found near the bottom of the main forums page in the "Regional Chapters" section, under "New England Region" . . . and here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum230/

This sounds like this speedometer needs to be rebuilt. If you spin the input at a continuous speed above really super slow, it should show a proportionately steady speed on the speedometer and increment the odometer if you do it for a bit.

Welcome aboard!

Continuing Speedo discussion

Speedo runs with an occasional flutter, but is reading 7moh under actual speed!

( nothing touched or changed except cable)

was there some adjustment that should have been made

thanks for your guidance

I used to rebuild speedometers a few years back. If it is off by 7mph all across the scale, you can CAREFULLY twist the needle while holding the speed cup (the round aluminum thing attached to the shaft the needle is attached to). If it is off by varying amounts you would need special tools to adjust it out (possibly a driven gear change in the transmission). A word of warning, keep magnets or magnetized tools far away as this will mess with the calibration. Also - do this adjustment at your own risk, I can't take any responsibility for a damaged component ><.
